Breast Reduction Mammoplasty
Excessively large sized
breast may cause a variety of symptoms and medial problems. The
patient usually presents with severely enlarged breasts usually
hanging down. The weight of such breast can cause a complex set
of symptoms.
The patients' complaints include chest pain, back pain, and neck
pain. Reducing the breast size includes the reduction of the nipple
areola the skin envelope and reduction of breast volume. The incision
needed to achieve a final aesthetic result varies according to
the volume that needs to be reduced. Those incisions vary from
an inverted T type to a scar as seen in the classical and most
common incision used. Those patients with moderate amounts of
volume reduction and minimal droopiness of the breast requiring
moderate amount of skin reduction will require only an incision
around the nipple areola to reduce its size as well as skin reduction
with or without a vertical incision down to the inframammary crease.
The methods used are personalized to the need of the individual
patient.
Breast reduction is
done under general anesthesia and can be performed on an outpatient
basis or a 23-hour admission. The recovery is usually about three
weeks till the patient is able to resume full function and activity
including heavy exercise. Whether the surgery of breast reduction
is covered by insurance depends on the volume to be removed and
the patient's symptoms.
