Laser Skin Resurfacing

Dermabrasion have proved its place in cosmetic skin resurfacing. Deep wrinkles and deep acne scarring respond very well to Dermabrasion and deep chemical peels.

Advances in laser technology however put this tool in the hands of the Plastic Surgeon for skin resurfacing. Laser is a powerful tool to deliver light energy in a precise and accurate manner. Computer technology has also added more accuracy precision and most important control of depth of laser abrasion.

With the precision of the laser, layers of skin are removed. With each pass of the laser, further depth is removed. Laser light also generates heat that can cause thermal damage, and has to be taken into account. Other lasers do not generate heat damage. This has to be taken into consideration for the healing process.

To ensure even depth to the laser abrasion, the skin has to be prepared. Skin care products ensure exfoliation of the Keratin Layer to an even level. Using hydroquinone stabilizes the cells containing the pigment that gives the skin its color. The depth of the laser resurfacing is customized to the patient's need and the skin characteristics.

Laser skin resurfacing is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Wrinkles
  • Acne Scarring
  • Scars
  • Sun Damaged Skin
  • Pre Cancerous Skin Conditions
  • Pigmentation Changes
  • Benign Skin Conditions
  • Keratosis
  • Rosacia
  • Rhinophyma (Thickened Nasal Skin)

Laser skin resurfacing's ideal candidate is fair complexion, skin type II, III, and I. The patient is free of any conditions that interfere with wound healing; all medications that interfere with wound healing, and has stopped Accutane for at least one year prior to the procedure.

Healing is complete in seven to ten days. At that time the new skin is thin, very sensitive, and red. The redness gradually softens and by the third week becomes pink. The pink color gradually disappears in about twelve weeks.
