Gynecomastia
Enlarged Male Breasts
Enlargement of the
male breast is a source of embarrassment and self-consciousness
about their appearance. The breast in men responds to hormonal
changes, however, these changes are temporary and only occasionally
become permanent. If involution does not occur within a year of
their
enlargement these changes are most probably permanent and require
surgical correction to reverse them. Several medications and substances
can cause breast enlargement in the male. Excess fatty deposit
in the chest can cause breast enlargement in males. Thus male
breast enlargement can be an increase in fat content or an increase
of the glandular portion or it can be an increase in both elements.
Correction may be performed
under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with twilight sedation.
If the excess is in the glandular tissue, then it can be reduced
through a curved incision around the areola. When excess fat is
present ultrasound liposuction is used to remove excess fat. Many
times both methods are used to achieve the appropriate shape and
size of the breast.
When performing this
surgery, one should take in consideration the rest of the body
habits. Recovery is fast. Many recover over a weekend and resume
moderate activities after that, achieving full function within
a week.
A compression vest
is worn for 3-6 weeks to help in healing and allow the skin to
heal tightly. It prevents complications and unwanted results.
