Body > Liposuction

  • Tumescent liposuction
  • Ultrasound liposuction

Liposuction targets areas of localized fat accumulation around the body. Areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. It can be very frustrating when we are doing everything we should yet these fat accumulations remain. New liposuction techniques developed in the past few years, can address those fat bulges that distort the body image, and thus our self confidence.

The way we perceive our body image influences how we present our selves to the outside world. The way we are looked at by others influences all aspect of our lives. Physical attractiveness consciously or subconsciously opens doors of opportunity, and enhances self confidence.

Areas that can be effectively treated with liposuction are the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, knees and calves. Liposuction can help us achieve our desired look and the body image we desire.

  • Liposuction may also be referred to as Lipo-Plasty, or suction assisted Lipectomy.
  • The best candidates for liposuction are near their ideal weight, with good skin elasticity and realistic expectations.
  • Liposuction is ideal for localized areas of fat build-up, and not a means of weight loss.
  • The surgery and recovery are generally associated with minimal discomfort.
  • Intravenous sedation with local anesthesia general anesthesia is used.
  • Excess fat is suctioned through a tube called a cannula. Cannula is narrow, so incisions are very small. Different size canula is used to achieve the ideal results, with smooth contours. Liposuction does not affect cellulite. Liposuction is not used for weight loss, nor is it a substitute for diet and exercise.

There is several liposuction techniques that can be used to enhance your outcome. These techniques may be used in addition to the traditional procedure of liposuction. Traditional Suction Assisted Liposuction, is performed by making small incisions, approximately one-quarter of an inch in length or less, near the area where fat is to be removed. A thin, hollow tube, called a cannula is inserted, and is attached to a suction machine or syringe that creates a vacuum. The cannula is gently moved back and forth to remove the unwanted fat.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is a technique where a mixture of saline salt solution and epinephrine (a drug that contracts blood vessels) and a local anesthetic is injected into the areas of fat accumulation before the fat is removed. Since there is very little blood loss, more fat can be removed than in the past without tumescent technique. In small areas of liposuction the procedure can be done under local anesthesia only.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

Ultrasound is used to liquefy fat. It is used along with the tumescent technique. Internal UAL is a two-step technique, an ultrasound cannula is introduced to liquefy fat. The fat is then vacuumed out by suction assisted liposuction. Sculpting is completed with very fine cannula and superficial liposuction. Both ultrasound liposuction and superficial liposculpture require great expertise. Ultrasound is fat specific, and causes less bleeding. The combination of tumescent liposuction and ultrasound allows for the removal of large volume of fat with minimal bleeding and bruises. Dr. Shureih is a well respected cosmetic surgeon in Baltimore, Maryland who possess all the expertise of liposuction to give you the results and body curves you desire.

The type of anesthesia used during liposuction is dependent on the extent of the procedure. In some cases, liposuction is performed under intravenous sedation with local anesthesia. In larger volume liposuction cases with multiple areas, it is performed under general anesthesia.

We encourage you to be active. Expect to have some swelling and bruising after surgery. This will gradually improve. By the third week, most of the swelling and bruising will resolve. You may have some minor swelling that can last for months (as long as six months). Compression garment is worn after surgery to reduce swelling and help the skin retract back and heal in that manner. This may need to be worn for up to six to twelve weeks. Once the area becomes less sensitive, start massage, water jet, and hand held massager can mobilize the fluid and help to soften the tissue.
