Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Body > Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reshapes the abdomen back to a youthful figure.

If you have had children, or changed in weight over the years, you may have loose skin, lax muscles and some excess fat in your abdominal area. If this area of your body has been resistant to dieting and exercise you may be a good candidate for abdominoplasty, better known as "tummy tuck.”. When the skin is of good quality, not loose, but there is too much fat around the abdomen and waist line, then Liposuction is the answer to your image problems.

During the abdominoplasty procedure, the muscles of the abdomen will be tightened to form a slimmer waistline and a flatter stomach. Excess fat is then removed before pulling the skin tight to form a smooth, taut contour.

As with any major surgery, the recovery process is shorter if you are healthy and fit coming to the procedure. Most patients will be able to go home the same day of the operation.

The procedure takes two to four hour of surgery, plus an added period for recovery period.

The incision is designed across the lower abdomen within the bikini line. Factors that determine the way the final scar looks is determined by the healing process and the genetic factors. Therefore it is very difficult to predict the quality of the final scar. However every advanced surgical and non surgical technique is used to give you the chance for a fine line of a scar.

If you're considering abdominoplasty, we invite you to come in for a consultation to discuss the benefits of this procedure and answer any questions you may have.

The procedure

Abdominoplasty is done under general anesthesia, as an out-patient procedure. The incision is placed in the lower abdomen within the bikini line. The lax muscles are tightened in the midline and laterally to help define the waist line. The skin is tightened and the excess is removed. The umbilicus (belly button) is brought through the skin in its new position and sutured in place. When an abdominal wall hernia is present, it is usually repaired at the time of the abdominoplasty. Every effort is made to make your surgical experience as comfortable as possible.

The use of Pain Pump has decreased the amount of pain significantly, and made the post surgical experience more comfortable.

Abdominal skin laxity can occur after weight loss, pregnancy, surgery, or loss of skin elasticity. Pregnancy causes the abdominal wall muscles to separate and weaken, which also contributes to the protrusion of the abdomen.

Healthy patients are the best candidates, who are finished with having more children. The best results are achieved when you are at or near your ideal body weight, and can maintain it with good diet and exercise after surgery.

To get the best results, sometime liposuction is also used for superior results.

The incision is well hidden in the Bikini line.
The length of the incision depends on the amount of skin laxity.
Normally scars fade with time; however some people are genetically predetermined to form thick scars or keloid and that is genetically predetermined. Every effort and fine surgical technique is used to give the chance for the best scar possible. After surgery the use of silicone gel sheeting may improve on scars, and help in rapid scar resolution.

Recovery is about one to two weeks. Full activity is resumed in three to four weeks. During the recovery period you should refrain from heavy activity, heavy lifting and pushing.

Restore a youthful appearance to the abdomen. The goal is tight skin and tight abdominal muscles. The final result Restores youthful appearance to the abdomen.

Restoring youth and tight abdomen sometimes require only liposuction with or without a MINI_ABDOMINOPLASTY, where the incision is still in the Bikini line, but much smaller. Recovery in this case is faster.

Such a procedure is ideal for the young patient with minimal skin and muscle laxity, but has more fat.

Abdominoplasty is one of the most gratifying procedures. Restoring youth and curves to your body image.

Flat stomach, tight abs and body curves are desired by everyone.  However, the toll of pregnancy, weight gain & weight loss, makes the stomach stretch and an easy target for bulges and rolls.  But it does not have to be that way; Baltimore plastic surgeon Dr. Shureih, chosen “TOP DOC” in Baltimore Magazine twice and in The National Directory of Top Docs many years, can give you the flat stomach and body curves you desire.

Liposuction, tummy tuck, or a combination of both can give you the figure you want. These procedures remove localized pockets of fat accumulation and excess skin. During the procedure the muscles are also tightened. This results in a dramatic improvement in appearance of the abdomen. The result is a tighter, flatter, firmer stomach and a narrower waist line. At the Maryland Cosmetic Surgery Center, Baltimore cosmetic surgeon Dr. Shureih pays attention to your cincerns in order to achieve the figure you desire.

The pubis falls down and ages, with folds and fat accumulation. We can rejuvenate and lift the pubis area for a better look and superb results.  The belly button can also be tightened and better positioned.

Using different techniques and advances in cosmetic surgery, we utilize tumescent liposuction, suction assisted lipectomy, and ultrasound liposuction to achieve the results that are best suited for each individual patient.

The best candidates for such a procedure are men and women who are in  good health, but have localized fat deposits and loose skin around the abdomen which is resistant to diet and exercise. Skin can not be tightened by exercise; it has to be surgically removed. Loose skin can not be tightened by exercise.

Tummy tuck results are particularly dramatic in women who have had multiple pregnancies or given birth to larger babies. This causes the muscles and skin of the abdomen to stretch, causing stretch marks and laxity of the skin to occur. During pregnancy, the muscles are stretched causing separation of the muscles and protrusion of the abdomen. When this happens, all available surgical techniques and innovations are utilized to achieve a flat abdomen and tight muscles. In some milder conditions all what is required is Liposuction and a mini-abdominoplasty. This results in a small incision line which is hidden in the bikini line.

There are several approaches to the tummy tuck; all involve an incision in the lower abdomen just above the pubic area. The design of the incision determines where the maximal pull is and also determines the definition of the waist. The incision is usually put within the bikini line. All these options will be discussed with you during the initial consultation. Dr. Shureih will guide you with your choices and will explain the best procedure for your specific needs.

Abdominoplasty is usually done as an outpatient procedure under general Anesthesia.  After surgery, soreness and discomfort can be well controlled with medication. We also will use a new innovation called the Pain Pump to make you more comfortable. After the surgery, you should avoid over-activity and straining for approximately three weeks. Full activity and exercise may be resumed by the fourth week. Most patients are back to work within two weeks.

The results are evident almost immediately after surgery and you will enjoy the new look with a flatter, firmer abdomen and a narrower waist line! The scar in the bikini line will fade with time. Abdominoplasty can also be combined with a medial thigh lift, a lateral thigh lift and a buttock lift; in that case it is called a lower body lift or circumferential body lift.

Dr. Shureih is a fully trained plastic and reconstrutive surgeon in Baltimore, Maryland. He is a board certified plastic surgeon with advanced education in Cosmetic Surgery, twenty five years of experience and thousands of procedures performed. He was chosen TOP DOC in Baltimore Magazine and the National Directory of Top Plastic Surgeons. He has extensive experience in Liposuction, Abdominoplasty, Lower Body Lifts and Thigh lifts.

Stretch marks removal

The only definitive treatment for stretch marks is the tummy tuck. The trade off of the stretch marks of the lower abdomen is a well placed scar within the bikini line, well hidden from site. To get an idea of what skin can be safely removed, a horizontal line can be drawn from just above the belly button (umbilicus) to the hair line and the hips laterally. A gentle curve downward from each hip is drawn with the lowest part of the line lying 2.5 inches above the pubic bone. This is the average amount of skin removed during an abdominoplasty. The abdomen is then elevated stretch it over the lower abdomen. The abdominal wall muscles are tightened to restore the tightness of the AB muscles. This provides a nice hour-glass appearance to the waist. If the lower abdomen skin contains the majority of the stretch marks, then abdominoplasty may be the ideal procedure to get rid of stretch marks. The remaining stretch marks move down with the stretched skin.

The cost of a tummy tuck is usually 4,000-6,000 dollars plus the anesthesia and facility fees. Many patients have spent several thousand dollars on various creams and treatments over the years before they resolve to get a tummy tuck. Every surgery carries with it risks and benefits and it is important to discuss these risks with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon prior to having the procedure.
